For A Good Time Call...My First Few Days In San Miguel De Allende, Mexico

I am going to talk about something real scawy!
Ready?
It is about visiting Mexico!  Now that is scawy!  hahahaha!!!

While Sam was off running around a volcano, on our second day, I was enjoying my first cup of coffee and playing with a new photo app.  Check out all these pics.
Where I had my morning coffee and journal writing meditation.
I found some of Jesse's tools at the place we were staying at.
Well after about an hour of waking up and messing around it was time to get into the studio.  Let us see if I can remember how to get to Jesse's studio.

Let the adventure begin!
Yes, you too can walk by yourself in Mexico.  Well at least in San Miguel.  I feel so comfortable there.
Except for all those damn cobblestones!
I dread walking on those things.  I suggest good walking shoes.  No heels unless you want to snap your stiletto clean off!
Looks kind of deserted for a Friday morning.
That is me looking all lost and stuff but I really was not.
Pay attention...
go down that way, cross here, turn there, pass the taco stand (wait!  there are lots of taco stands), and go up there.
Finally!  I arrived.

Jesse and I had lots to do.
Well he had lots to do and I was only concentrating on one thing and that was tool making.  In the picture below we are hardening the steel.
Hardening the steel
A friend wanted one of Jesse's famous Hummers (hummingbirds).  So we had to add that to the list of things to do.
She liked the Corona but did not know what wings she wanted.

Remember...it starts with a vision.  That antique roofing copper is sweeeeet!
Sample of the two metals to be used for the Hummer.
Let the games begin!
Jesse sawing out the body.
Here Jesse is preparing the body of the hummer.  Lot of sanding going on there.
Voilà!  Hummer
Now it was lunch time!
You would have no idea that this place was a place to get some of the best food in town.
Located right behind that truck.
Señora Luz's Place
Señora Luz and Armenia cooking up a storm!
My favorite was the Longanisa which is the sausage.
Absolutely delish!
I could have really used a nap after this but we had to get back to it.
Jesse hardening the steel of a soon to be stamping tool
Jesse managed to make 3 stamping tools, and a hummer.  I made 1 tool and ate.  All in one day!
Not too shabby, eh?
Everything did not go exactly as planned though.  We ran out of liver of sulfur.
So basically we were SOL for LOS!  hahaha!!!
Yes!  I have jokes.

It was great passing a good time with mi amigo Jesse!  I felt like a kid going to my friends place and playing with all their toys.  We ate some fantastic honey, listened to music, talked about people, places, and things, and played with a bunch of really cool tools!

Then it was time for Pizza at La Mesa Grande.  They have a wood burning oven!
I swear that is all we did...eat, eat, and eat some more!
Ohhh...what shall I put on my pizza?
Yep!  I conquered that mountain there and almost fell into the volcano over there!  hahaha!!!
I want to mention that Jesse does give private lessons in metalsmith.
You can go on vacation in San Miguel and take a class with Jesse at the same time.  He can teach you just about ANYTHING!
Here is his website if you want more information.

    1. Gracias Stacie! Going to San Miguel is always a treat and a great break from this New Orleans heat. I love making my own tools. I feel such fuzziness inside when I use the tools that I make. It's awesome! Thanks for stopping by. ♥

The Risk to Bloom

It all started with an acorn button and grew from there. In an earlier post I mentioned this button swap blog hop, that I am participating in, and how I was immediately drawn to the acorn button.  Every day I would hold it in my hand, feel its essence, exam it, and then put it down.  This lasted for about 2 weeks. Then I remembered I had etched an oak tree on to brass when making buttons for my partner Kylie of Lotus Out Loud .  And... so begins the journey of creating something with this wonderful acorn button, which only started yesterday. Haha!  Etched brass was copper riveted to a piece of oak.  Merci beaucoup Papi for finding some oak!   I am using what Jesse taught me in his workshop .  It was the first time trying his technique.  It worked beautifully! The riveted brass was then captured with a piece of pierced copper. Voila! And then the day came  when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk to bloom.

South of the border in Oaxaca, Mexico

I've been idle for too long but I have lots to share with you! Oh where to begin?   Let me first say that Oaxaca is a place full of beautiful people.  The city was VERY safe and the place we stayed in was absolutely wonderful.  And the very best thing about it all...the plane ride was only 3.5 hours from New Orleans!  Gotta love that. I don't want to bore you with all the details so I think I will stick to the art side of things.  Oaxaca is known for their textiles but I didn't take any pictures of any textiles.  :(  Lo siento. There was this place that we stumbled upon called La Mano Magica  #26 Macedonio Alcala 203, Centro .  This place had a variety of high end pieces for the taking and a price.  Off to the side we noticed a show going on and I immediately knew the work.  It was the work of ceramicist Alfonso Castillo.  One of the the great folk artist of Mexico.   Eeeee!!! How exciting! FAMILIA CASTILLO Candelabro Ofrenda a mi papa Alfonso died i

The Arrowmont Experience Pt. 1

I know from previous experience that I had to ask the driver to stop at a grocery store before dropping us off at Arrowmont.  I was feeling so good about having all my ducks in order and then this happened! I'm sure I screamed WTH because everyone was looking at me but I wasn't the only one in shock. I was thinking...great!  Now I will have to walk to get my wine.  LOL!!! Arrowmont for 2 entire weeks!  Yeah....Bring it on.  I can do this...roommate annd all. I was in Anne Havel's  All Fired Up: Who Knew a Torch Could Do All This? My notebook for ALLLllllll the notes I'm going to take. OMG!  I don't know where to begin.  I have so much to share.  Let's see... I fell in love with a cup. Annnd...then I bought a cup made by Jason B. Burnett.  He had me at the hexagons. Just an aside here.  I couldn't buy the cup I fell in love with.  Arrowmont has an assortment of ceramic cups in the mess hall to use.  I could post a cup a day on I
